None of them are exotic, and all of them are decided months before anyone travels, usually by a well-intentioned team booking from another country using assumptions that do not hold here. Here are the seven that cost the most, and what to do instead.
Almost every disappointing Antalya retreat can be traced to a decision made at booking stage: the wrong season, the wrong property type, or an agenda designed without seeing the site.
Mistakes one and two: booking the wrong week, and the wrong kind of resort
The first mistake is treating Antalya as a single season. July and August are hot enough that outdoor sessions and daytime activities become uncomfortable, and they coincide with peak leisure demand, so you pay the most for the least suitable conditions. April, May, September, and October give you workable weather, better rates, and properties that are not operating at full leisure occupancy. The second mistake is booking a leisure resort for a working retreat. A property optimised for holiday guests may have excellent rooms and a meeting room that is an afterthought: no natural light, poor acoustics, fixed furniture, weak connectivity, and a location next to the pool bar. If any part of your agenda is a genuine working session, inspect the meeting space specifically, ask about acoustic separation and daylight, and confirm bandwidth rather than accepting a claim of high-speed internet.
Mistakes three and four: over-programming, and no site visit
The third mistake is filling every hour. Teams travel a long way and leadership feels obliged to justify the cost with content, so the schedule runs from breakfast to late dinner with no gaps. The result is a group that is present but not engaged by day two, and the conversations that actually justify the trip never happen because there is no unstructured time for them. Cap working blocks at ninety minutes, build in genuine afternoon downtime, and accept that the pool conversation is part of the programme rather than a gap in it. The fourth mistake is designing the agenda without seeing the site. Distances between rooms, the walk to the beach, whether the terrace is usable at four in the afternoon, and where a hundred people can actually stand with a drink are all invisible in a brochure and decisive on the day.
Mistakes five and six: transfers, and no arrival buffer
The fifth mistake is underestimating movement. Antalya's resort areas spread along the coast, and a property described as being near the airport may be fifty minutes away in season traffic, while Kemer, Belek, and Side are further still. Any off-site excursion needs its travel time budgeted honestly in both directions, and an afternoon activity forty minutes away consumes most of the afternoon. Group arrivals into transfer windows rather than running individual pickups, and put a named contact on the ground for each window. The sixth mistake is scheduling content on arrival day. With multiple flights from multiple countries, at least one will be delayed, and a session on arrival evening means either starting without people or starting late with a tired room. Keep arrival day social and low-commitment, and begin the substance on a full morning.
Mistake seven: assuming everyone experiences the week the same way
The seventh and most damaging mistake is designing for the median attendee. Evening programmes built entirely around alcohol exclude non-drinkers, several faith groups, and anyone in recovery from the social core of the retreat. Dietary requirements collected late produce a visibly inferior plate, which communicates something no team-building session can undo. Physical activities offered without a genuine parallel alternative leave people sitting out in front of colleagues. Accessibility varies widely between resort properties, and step-free access to rooms, pool, and meeting space needs verifying rather than assuming. Prayer space is easy to arrange and conspicuous when missing. Collect all of this at invitation stage, brief the property in writing before arrival, and never resolve a requirement at reception in front of the person it concerns.
